Anybody know of any (good) books about Jacques-Louis David, preferably ones that don't cost billions of dollars and focus on the Revolutionary period as opposed to the Napoleonic?
This (http://www.amazon.com/Jacques-Louis-David-Revolutionary-Artist-Revolution/dp/0807843504) seems like a good place to start. There's also a general biography (http://www.amazon.com/Jacques-Louis-David-Dorothy-Johnson/dp/0691032181/ref=cm_lmf_tit_2_rdssss0/104-7336001-5286325). I haven't read either of them, though, so I can't vouch for how good they'd be. XD;

*whistles* Wooooo, they'res the million dollar question, I wish I could help you out but I'm having the same dilema ^^;;
I have bought Thomas Crow's Emulation: David, Drouais and Girodet in the Art of Revolutionary France. It is very good, though the art historian has some weird theories with his artistic interpretations -- he's very "gender"-focussed too, sometimes, which I don't entirely mind, but it can get weird. It concerns some of David's students too and his studio, which is also interesting. I also have Simon Lee's David which is more a biography from the start to the end of David's life, but also gives many details on the paintings and what David had to say about them. Both books have many pictures inside, which is always good. They weren't too expansise compared to other books, as far as I remember -- 25$ or 30$, but it's to be expected with many pictures inside. Hope it helps. :)
