Apr. 24th, 2008 11:03 amHello all :D
I'm doing my coursework on the French Revolution--- the sanscullotte's role in the Terror, to be precise--- and I'm actually enjoying it an obscene amount. Really, my teacher yesterday was like 'this isn't your thesis, it's not your baby' which reveals the extent to which I like reading Robespierre.
But, anyway, can anyone lead me to some of Marat's work from L'Ami du Peuple etc. (or anything from 1792-4?). The only one I can seem to find is on marxists.org (surprise, surprise) and I need to analyse his language....Anything particularly angry or radical-ish is good.
Thanks :)

Hi. Resident Marat-ist
Date: 2008-04-24 03:46 pm (UTC)three) and, uh, do you have any idea how many issues he published? At my old university, we had a collection of volumes of L'ami du peuple and it was 24 volumes long. I did a quick online search and found nothing, which isn't surprising, it's much too vast for someone to retype that. (hmm, I should consider it one day though) Each issue was about 16 pages each also.
and two) calling Marat a marxist is uuh, pushing it. The only reason people claim that is because Peter Weiss made him one in Marat/Sade, I have nothing against the Marxist movement, but yeah. >_>; How about we don't associate people with a mouvement they don't belong in.
Ugh, forgive me if I come off sounding like a pretencious jerk, but this completly rubbed me the wrong way. I did a dissertation on the sans-culottes mouvement (a whole 29 pages) and I'm looking for it right now and if I can find it - I'll give you the snippets of l'ami du peuple I'll let you know. I want to help you out with this, because dude, I love Marat, but PLEASE don't slap him in the same old box that most people do.
Re: Hi. Resident Marat-ist
Date: 2008-04-24 06:51 pm (UTC)2) Seeing as this essay is 30% of my A-Level mark as a whole and I'm doing History at University this year, something with substance, as I've never considered him a radical zealot.
3) I never have considered Marat a marxist, I just know that many marxists and sympathetic marxist historians consider him to have some protoype marxist tendencies , so that was why I wasn't surprised to find a small collection of his writings at marxists.org.
4) I'm sorry if the way I phrased my question rubbed you the wrong way, but I have done my reading, and am not just 'slapping him in the same old box' because I plan to be as balanced as possible.

4) bah, it's cool, I just really hope I don't come off as a total pretencious jerk ^^; but I am serious about my last offer, I've been digging through my things looking for my essay and if I find anything, I'll be sure to let you know.
Gah, I feel so mean!Re: Hi. Resident Marat-ist
