And btw, no, he was not put in upside down - what's the book you heard that from? I also heard it, but the answer is no, they didn't. It would have been irrational that he was the only one ever in the history of guillotining that they did that too, and also it doesn't really work well that way. It's one of the many "evil villain" innovations about him; that's all.
