Have you ever seen Neil Gaiman's Sandman comic, the episode 'Thermidor'? He has a fat, sadistic Robespierre leering at Tom Paine, who protests that Robespierre is killing some ludicrous number of thousands a week - apparently, Gaiman pitched the idea of a French Revolution episode to his publisher, then, knowing nothing about it, hurriedly read Schama. I've long held the Thermidor comic against Gaiman, teaching a generation of comic book readers that the revolutionary left were a bunch of gloating sadists who stage puppet shows with bodies, but maybe I should blame Schama instead?
