It's a novel, a piece of fiction, not a scholar work. As for the truth, we'll probably never learn, like you say: they took it to their graves. Studying history one can only say that their relationship was strong (to the point) and complicated. Przybyszewska gives one explanation, a possible one we can accept as well as decline, as there is no way of verifying it.
