Hello everyone!

Two things once again:
1. Would anyone be interested in beta- reading a Scarlet Pimpernel fanfic? I've always been irritated with the characterization of Robespierre in said series of novels, and am attempting to portray a more historically accurate one.
2. Is it true that Rosseau personally tutored Robespierre? According to someone on

historical_love, he did, but I've never read about it. I'd think that it'd be something important enough in Robespierre's life to be included in all the things I've read on him.... Admittedly, I haven't read as much as I would like, nor have I read as much as everyone in this community, but I'd think that said information would pop up in at least one article or something. Have I just not read enough?

I took a university course entirely on the French Revolution and I have read The Social Contract and a few other things by Rousseau (some of it in the original French, too) and I COMPLETELY disagree with what that the person said in her comment. Robespierre highly admired Rousseau and probably read all of his works but he was not tutored by him. I don't think two two ever even met and frankly, I can't really see Rousseau as anyone's tutor.

That person's obviously not a Robespierre fan (especially after her comment about him being a "historical failure") and, personally, I'd dismiss her remarks because they're 1) poorly researched and clearly biased (which is a bit sad since she claims to be a history major) and 2) she sounds like an arrogant...person.

Haha, sorry, I don't even know you and yet I'm defending you like this. But you've clearly done your homework and, well, no one bashes Robesy on my watch!

It's true, Robespierre was never tutored by Rousseau. [It would have been amazing if true. I don't think the Girodins would have heard the end of it!] It was fashionable for admirers to visit Rousseau's house in hopes of catching a glimspe of him. Robespierre did visit him while he was still in college when he was about 19 and got that lucky glimpse, but was probably never received by him. He wrote in a dedication to Rousseau: I saw him in his last days, and this memory is for me a source of proud joy. I looked at his august features, I saw the imprint of the black disappointments to which the injustices of men had condemned him.

I'm 100% sure that Rousseau never personally tutored Maxime. I don't think I've even read half as extensively on him as many other people around here, but I definitely have read enough to know that it would have come up somewhere in my research by now if he had. I agree with

cachecache - that user definitely isn't a fan of Maxime (nor does she appear to have much of an interest in the French Revolution in general, just judging from the kind of history-inspired icons she uses), and as such, I wouldn't trust her word against what you and all of the rest of us have read.

...Damn, her 'historical failure' comment is bugging me. But I don't trust myself to respond to it without getting...er...very, very rude, shall we say. XD;

Yeah, no, as everyone said, Rousseau didn't personally tutor Robespierre; Robespierre said he saw him once, and he wrote later how it was Rousseau who "taught me to appreciate the dignity of my own nature" etc, and became a bit of an obsessee as we know. C'est tout. I can only think that maybe "taught" was misconstrued just a liiiittle? ^^
