I don't know if any of the other readers on here have had a child (I am a mom of one expecting another), but her description of being imprisoned five weeks after delivery made a very deep impression on me. Whatever else anyone might have to write about her, this speaks volumes about her physical and emotional fortitude. It's a wonder she and her baby survived the ordeal at all and that she was able to nurse through this time. The first six weeks postpartum are considered extremely high risk even today for both mother and baby, so much so that even the most basic, brief maternity leave extends for that time. I cannot imagine being a first time mom, still just learning to nurse and diaper, with nobody experienced to have around and help (her sister might have been great emotional support, but probably didn't know any more about baby care than did she). Add to that postpartum depression compounded by grief... unbelievable.
