I just discovered the website Video INA, it is an archive of French television and radio programs online, from which you can download programs either to rent (48 hours for 2 euros) or buy (6 euros). It has a whole bunch of really rare stuff, including....

The extra benefit of this is that it downloads it as a DivX file, which you can then burn to a dvd, as opposed to buying a French Region 2 DVD that might not work with a US dvd player. The site's a little confusing, but I figured it out.

These movies are, of course, all in French without subtitles.

That is quite possibly the most awesome news ever. I can't say I've heard many good things about "Saint-Just et la Force des Choses," but I've been dying to see it anyway. Thanks for the links!

What have you heard about it?? I haven't heard *anything* about it (which didn't stop me from shilling out 12 euros for it, but maybe it'd be better to rent it). Thus far, I'm rather amused by Saint-Just's poofy 70s hair and excessive eyeliner, but it seems alright.

I also think that the actor playing Saint-Just has a really accurate face. Christopher Thompson in LRF is handsome, but in a more modern way. This guy has the softer features that were much more in vogue at the time and he's even got the Saint-Just bizarro changing appearance thing down. From some angles he does look very beautiful, but from others he looks kind of odd. Might explain some of the portraits.

What I've heard that's negative is mostly about the thesis of the book it's based on, which it naturally follows (that Robespierre and Saint-Just were really rivals). Also about Saint-Just's overly feminized appearance in it--the eyeliner probably has something to do with it. As to his face, I suppose I'll just have to see for myself.

There apparently is a way with DivX, but I don't know how and you might not be able to redistribute it because when you buy it, it logs into your account each time you watch it (unless you were to burn and then reburn, I suppose). You'd also need someone with excellent French and a whole lot of time on their hands. ;-)

Brilliant! The bbc keep saying they're going to do their archive like this but they haven't, yet. My ancient Mac's being arsey as it usually is (even with the clip on the website - it's frozen on the actor's bum so I've yet to see his face!) but hopefully I can get my techie neighbour to do it (because men hate to admit to failure in the digital department).

Is there anywhere that one can find the script to some of these so we can read along as we watch..? Or someone willing to make one, or - better yet - do subtitles? Lord, I hate not speaking French. It kills all my enjoyment.

So I was watching that scene and... Jesus, you're right. I was waiting for them to start making out or something. All that intense staring, whispering, and heavy breathing. And then I heard "redistribution of property..."

I know! And a whole lot of Robespierre writhing around on the bed and Saint-Just grabbing him. Yeah, basically, I spent the whole scene being like "They're talking about the Ventose decrees. Seriously? Seriously???"

Aww...This is so awsome and terrible. Awesome because I can watch the clip and awful because I can't buy the video (I have no idea how i can pay that site. I don't have mastercard, credit card, or, or anything. and I can't read French T T)
