I just discovered the website Video INA, it is an archive of French television and radio programs online, from which you can download programs either to rent (48 hours for 2 euros) or buy (6 euros). It has a whole bunch of really rare stuff, including....

Saint-Just et la Force des Choses (Part 1)

Saint-Just et la Force des Choses (Part 2)

La Terreur et la Vertu (Danton)

La Terreur et la Vertu (Robespierre)

The extra benefit of this is that it downloads it as a DivX file, which you can then burn to a dvd, as opposed to buying a French Region 2 DVD that might not work with a US dvd player. The site's a little confusing, but I figured it out.

These movies are, of course, all in French without subtitles.

That is quite possibly the most awesome news ever. I can't say I've heard many good things about "Saint-Just et la Force des Choses," but I've been dying to see it anyway. Thanks for the links!

What I've heard that's negative is mostly about the thesis of the book it's based on, which it naturally follows (that Robespierre and Saint-Just were really rivals). Also about Saint-Just's overly feminized appearance in it--the eyeliner probably has something to do with it. As to his face, I suppose I'll just have to see for myself.

Does anyone know how to add subtitles?

Brilliant! The bbc keep saying they're going to do their archive like this but they haven't, yet. My ancient Mac's being arsey as it usually is (even with the clip on the website - it's frozen on the actor's bum so I've yet to see his face!) but hopefully I can get my techie neighbour to do it (because men hate to admit to failure in the digital department).

Is there anywhere that one can find the script to some of these so we can read along as we watch..? Or someone willing to make one, or - better yet - do subtitles? Lord, I hate not speaking French. It kills all my enjoyment.

Oh, I dunno - some scenes in Terreur et Vertu looked really romantic until you realised they were dicussing the Ventose decrees!

But discussing the Ventose decrees, enlightenment of the People and social ideals is truly romantic! ♥

Ah, but no: she got totally wrong the basics of their relationship. *nodnod* ;-)

Yes, but it certainly wasn't the usual conclusion to a whispery bedside clinch!

That's just because Robespierre was sick; they weren't going to show on television what usually happened when he was not! :O

And they're so close and so touching each other...

Actually, I just remembered I posted a translated transcript of the scene, as well as detailed screencaps and "animations" somewhere on my LJ, if you're interested. ^^

Actually, what's scary is that Saint-Just looks like a girl in my class. Really.

Aww...This is so awsome and terrible. Awesome because I can watch the clip and awful because I can't buy the video (I have no idea how i can pay that site. I don't have mastercard, credit card, or, or anything. and I can't read French T T)
but better than nothing at all > <

Great news! I'll see if I could afford "Saint-Just ou la Force des Choses"...since I own the other two ones. Muhahaha.
