French Revolution stuff to do in Paris?

Hey all! I know I can't exactly be called an 'active' member of this comm (in my defence, this is genuinely because I am shocked and horrified by my total lack of knowledge in comparison to most of you, and am seeking to rectify this before I come here and make a fool out of myself), but I'm spending a week in Paris right now and I was wondering if any of you could point me in the general direction of Revolution Must Sees in the area (of which I imagine there would be no little quantity!) I'm here with my father, and he very obligingly took me on a rather long trek down Rue St-Honoré today so I could find the building where Robespierre spent the last 3 years of his life. Seeing the little plaque with his name on it made me ridiculously happy; especially as yesterday we had gone around looking at all the Rimbaud (Arthur) sites we could think of without finding a single mention of him.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I would be so grateful if you could mention any Revolutionary things to be seen in Paris. I've seen a little bit, but I'm sure I've barely scratched the surface. I will of course take a ton of photos of anything remotely relevant and probably post them here, if that isn't against the rules, or some such. Thank you all in advance. I love this comm, and even though I never post and never comment, I come lurk a lot, and your shared enthusiasm for this wonderful period in history makes me feel in somewhat less lonely in my obsession. So thanks again. ♥

Hi - There were a number of posts this autumn (September onwards, I think) when several people on this comm visited/moved to Paris discussing places to go - my computer is misbehaving at the mo (slow slow slow!) but if you scroll back a page or two you should find them! (Musée Carnavalet, Cafe Procope, Conciergerie and others (including a Police museum or something I hadn't heard of before!) - if you're a bit gothy, there's the catacombs, too - the lime pit bones of the guillotined were cleared to the catacombs in the 19thc.

I think others can answer this better than I can, though!

All of the ones mentioned by [livejournal.com profile] victoriavandal I second. The Musée Carnavalet is the best place to see revolution-related things you never even thought about before (Marat's doorknobs!), the Café Procope is... well, seriously, their toilets are labelled "Citoyens" and "Citoyennes". (About the Prefecture of Police museum: it's in the police station in the 5th arrondissement - you need to go inside and ask to be taken up to see it - it's very cool, full of signed documents and pamphlets and such, and a guillotine blade - I think they say it's the one that was used on Charlotte Corday - which was unfortunately not there when I went - hopefully will get to go back and see that though.) Also the Panthéon is incredible. Other than that - and it sounds like you've already been doing some of this - it's amazing just walking around certain places that played their part in the Revolution - like the Tuileries and the Place de la Révolution Concorde. And I was quite fond of the Palais-Royal, but that might just be me. ;D

Also, have a nice time in Paris~!

Maybe you may also visit Rue Saint-Honoré, in which Robespierre lived along with Duplay family, and the Hôtel-de -Ville...O.K, it's not the same building from back then, since the original one was burned down by Commune Revolution in the 1870's, but it's the exact replica, so you may figure it out how it was in 1789-1794.

Other wonderful place to visit is the Conciergerie and the Palais of Justice, without mentioning Champs Elysées.

Paris is a great city, you'll see. Once you visits it, you will be always wanting to return.

Oh nooo! I was in Morocco this past week! I presume you're not still in Paris? If you were I'd show you around to all the revolutionary sites. :-(
