I took AP European History my senior year in highschool (which is the fancy way of saying that it was a few months ago) and we wasted a shitload of time doing a roleplaying assignment where we all had to show up as an Enlightenment figure and participate in a "salon." The one upside was that I got to be Marat. I showed up in a bath robe and one of those with a notepad with a long list of grievances. I brought oatmeal. To give you some insight into how bad the class was apart from this assignment, we also spent an entire month on a French Revolution puppet show and wound up having to cover WWI through the destruction of the Berlin Wall in one class period.
Umm...I digress. I mostly just wanted to point out how useful those things are for pretending to be Marat. :)
God, you have good schools there! The BBC America correspondent was discussing this the other day - that Americans are more forward socially because in school you are encouraged to participate - show and tell etc - rather than just sit there like we had to. Classroom interventions were limited to things like 'did James I's wife know he was gay?' and one attempt by a new teacher to make some of us do an impromptu play in front of the blackboard one afternoon. "Are you Lord Darnley? Then die! I'm stabbing you. Fall over."
hahaha....well, there is something to be said for that. I think that it DOES contribute to us being more socially-driven. however, it leaves a lot of room for lessons to fail in their educational value when the teacher is trying so hard to make them fun. also, this teacher was just straight up BAD.
and don't you have higher history/social sciences test scores as a nation than us anyway? I can't find a recent statistic, but I recall seeing one that confirmed it just a few weeks ago...
Wow, this definitely takes me back to my AP Euro days! So fun. My favorite little "project" was a music video that some of my classmates did on the Russian Revolution--I remember the multiple failed attempts on Rasputin's life as being particularly well-done:D But your role-playing assignment sounds like a lot of fun, too.
I had to be Marat for an AP Euro class, too! Only this was a French Revolution simulation thing. Although since we were short on time, we had to cut it short, so I never got to be l'Ami du Peuple. All we did was pay taxes. :( It was fun while it lasted, though...I even planned to wear a turban on my head when the time came down to it, haha.
wow.i took AP European history too but that was in my senior year? Yeah. that was a a year ago xd I remember some kid trying to draw Robespierre. It was horrid.
They just drew a stick figure..and some kind of robe on it..but no one got it..i didn't until he drew arrows coming down. And then we were like..WTF?
We mostly bs in that class. It was fun. At least i could draw Maxime without caring too much xD But i wished we could of done a French Revolution puppet show. That would of been awesome..
