The thing is that Wajda's Danton had little to do with the Communist bloc in the 1970-1980 either. After 1968, nobody believed in the system, there were no fanatics in power anymore, just cynical power-seekers. it was not the cruel and sincere 1950s, it was just "rats on a sinking ship", the triumph of disbelief and corruption ;-)
