1792 Assembly love-in!

Hi - I'm going to try and upload a picture I found and love, as a follow-up to the 'neoclassical slash' on estellacat's page. It's from vol 13 of Prudhomme's weekly newspaper Revolutions de Paris, 7 Juillet 1792. I've never tried uploading pics to this site, so apologies if my first attempt at an lj cut fails horribly, as the preview suggests it will, but I just feel I have to share it with the world (or that little corner of it that likes a bit of republican slashiness, anyway).

Oh, hell - it's come out tiny! Any technical suggestions welcome, but I'm on dial-up (because I live in a picturesque British village full of thatched cottages and old people and footballers, and broadband's tentacles haven't reached this far yet) and photobucket crashes my server...

the size is good, all you've gotta do is click on it once, then again when it takes you to the new page, and you can see it huge. thanks for posting this, by the way, they're all so hilariously cute!

Yay! Thanks for the tip, I didn't know it did that. The original etching's quite small, but it's amazing how much detail there is in there - and some of it looks really intense (where are their hands going?!)

Ah- the subtitle is illegible this small, but it reads: "Le 7 Juillet 1792 sur la motion perfide de M. Lamourette Eveque de Lion qui proposa d'oublier toute haine d'opinion: aussitot une grand partie des membres s'embrassent". I forgot to look up the particulars surrounding this event, but there seem to be quite a few of these kiss and make-up sessions at the Assembly/Convention and Jacobins: the love doesn't last long...

Thanks! If my 'technical advisor' calls round this week, I'll see if he can resize it bigger somehow, because the detail's just wonderful! Some of them are getting very friendly on the back benches...the president looks lonely, too, though, poor soul!

That come from a little known event during the Revolution. The Kiss of Lamourette. A man named Lamourette, (he might have been a deputy) gave a speech to the Convention basically saying we should, "make love not war," (yes, the first hippies were actully from the French Revolution) The Convention burst into joy, and people started randomly kissing who ever was next to them. I think only the French could do somthing like that. :)

Excellent! Thank you for the information. I've never come across it in the general Rev histories (just checking an index here - no....!), so I've just googled it from your tip: it says there's a French expression derived from the event, 'baiser-Lamourette', meaning 'insincere or ephemeral reconciliation', though the examples of use I've just come across seem to be 19thc. Do you know if it's still in use in the 21stC?
(I've got to say, some of them look pretty sincere to me...!)

Robert Darnton (author of the Great Cat massacare) wrote a book called The Kiss of Lamourette. It's very good, the open letter to a movie producer about a Napoleon movie is hilarious!
