cake! shoes! puppies! that damn marie antoinette movie

Ok. So I went to see that Marie Antoinette movie. On the one hand I liked it because of the awesome costuming [hot guys in wigs & capri pants!], but on the other hand it blew. The movie had a lot of pointless scenes and progressed in an almost painfully slow manner, which is a total shame since Mizz Sophia "I'mNotAsGoodAsMyDaddyButOMG!MarcJacobsIsAmazing" Coppola had unprecendented access to Versailles. I still have every intention of buying this crap on DVD, but the whole movie came across as an overbudget overglorified senior year student film with subliminal "Come Visit France! Strap on Your Pannier & Tour Versailles!" messages.

I'm not going to even get started on how the Revolution was completely glossed over. I don't remember if Necker was even portrayed in it.

What's everyone else's opinions/rants?

About the same really. I think I had a formal post in it in my journal, I'll copy and paste it here:

So, Marie-Antoinette.

What can I say about this movie. Honnestly. I don't know. I was enchanted, I must confess. But those who have known me for a while, know I had SUCH a weakness for period clothing, hair, and VERSAILLE. I confess, I've been in LOVE with it ever since I step foot in that marvelous palace.

but I DO have a few comments, I had more, but writting in the dark is VERY HARD

- unneccesary amount of pink. Really. Marie-Antoinette never wore that much fucking pink.
- I take back whatever I said about the man playing Louis XVI not being a good choice, he was SO LOUIX XVI it was RIDICULOUS!
- I COULD SPOT DUBARRY FROM A MILE FUCKING AWAY. what a hoe.
- this movie did bring light to my EVER so lasting statement about Marie-Antoinette - WRONG. PERSON. FOR. THE. JOB. The revolution was when she got FIRED.
- they repainted one of her famous painting with Dunst's face - made her look like a cheap slut
- when we first see Louis XVI he has a tricolored cockade on his hat - I'm a TAD confused here.
- the scene where Joseph has to tell Louis how to sleep with his sister was PRICELESS
- They rarely mention the political situation in Paris, so, when the October Days roll around, people where VERY fucking lost to why they wanted her head so badly. because the socio-political side was completly ignored, people left the theaters wondering what the fuck is going on, I know a friend of mine, who saw it at the same time as I, ran up to me with THOUSANDS of questions
- Hans Axel Von Fersan was hot. 'nuff said. I have eyes, and they liked what they saw :3

And like you mentionned, the pace was really slow then HORRIBLY FAST-FOWARD!!

-cough- I second the last point. >.>

I actually liked it. A lot of people were like "Well, it didn't even focus on the Revolution and the end of her life", but.. wasn't the movie supposed to be about her regular life, not when she gets beheaded and such? I liked it... although they didn't mention the affair of the necklace deal -tear-.

I loved when they were showing all her shoes and they threw in a random pair of blue Converse. =)

I don't like the amount of modernization *doesn't even know if that's a word* they put the whole period through >_> but that's just me. I'm a horrid nitpicker.

I have heard lots of rants and I just have one opinion to offer: Historical fiction (which is what this is) is to history what science fiction is to science. If you're looking at this movie and criticizing it for not being historically accurate, you might wish to rewatch the "Star Wars" movies and write a rant about the chances of everyone in the galaxy being bipedal and English-speaking. Science fiction is a way to talk about the present in a round-about way to make a point that might otherwise be difficult to swallow. A wildly inaccurate, imaginary future often doubles for the present day. Historical fiction is the exact same thing - a wildly inaccurate, imaginary past doubles for the present day. If you want a thinly veiled portrait today's oblivious, self-absorbed, spoiled rich teenagers, you might see it in this movie. If you want an accurate depiction of the French Revolution, may I suggest you explore the documentary genre.

my complaint about the lack of socio-political situation was because people didn't understand why the crowd was there at the end. I find that maybe if they mentionned it a bit more, people would of understood it more ^-^;

Agreed! I think I was the only person in the theator NOT confused!

I watched this movie at its norwegian premiere last friday and I enjoyed it so much more that I thought I would. I have such a weakness for everything involving period clothing and funny wigs.

I actually liked it. A lot of people were like "Well, it didn't even focus on the Revolution and the end of her life", but.. wasn't the movie supposed to be about her regular life, not when she gets beheaded and such? I liked it... although they didn't mention the affair of the necklace deal -tear-.

Agreed. I quite liked that it didn't focus on the revolution and that it came in very suddenly, since I believe that it somewhat resemblance how it seemed to Marie Antoinette as she lived protected from the world outside.

The duchess of Polignac was priceless! I also loved Judy Davies as the comtesse de Noailles. She's such a magnificent actress. Dunst didn't make my day, although I thought she did a decent job portraying the naive, little girl in the beginning.

I take back whatever I said about the man playing Louis XVI not being a good choice, he was SO LOUIX XVI it was RIDICULOUS!
Indeed, and very adorable me thinks ^^

Historical fiction (which is what this is) is to history what science fiction is to science. If you're looking at this movie and criticizing it for not being historically accurate, you might wish to rewatch the "Star Wars" movies and write a rant about the chances of everyone in the galaxy being bipedal and English-speaking.
Now that's something I've never thought about before. I'm very glad you pointed it out. (It is also a great excuse to love silly, historical inaccurate films).

Overall I liked it, but sorely missed the diamond neckless affair. Not to mention the awfully slow speed in the beginning and far to much pink.

I understand all of your points, but the story was about Marie Antoinette. Not the Revolution or the people of France.
