176 Screencaps from La Terreur et la Vertu. Brought to you by estellacat and maelicia.

Thus I wish to share with you the 1964 TV movie La Terreur et la Vertu by Stellio Lorenzi and Alain Decaux.

Ah, the 1960s! The glorious decade of the victorious left! When the revolutionary, republican and jacobin tradition reigned over historiography!... Long before Furet’s Reaction, which brought with it films such as Wajda’s "Danton", Enrico’s "La Révolution française", De Broca’s "Chouans", Rohmer’s "L’Anglaise et le Duc", Jacquot’s "Sade", Coppola’s "Marie-Antoinette" and the Supreme Being Knows What could be next. Meh.

But that is another story. Back to La Terreur et la Vertu.

I begin with screencaps, which were made by [livejournal.com profile] estellacat. I only uploaded them. :D (And yet, it was very, very, very long. >.> )

these are so sweet! T___T

[identity profile] vulpea-rea.livejournal.com 2007-09-01 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
xD! totally awesome that you posted this and the sound clips, though, i'm reliving it.

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-09-01 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, did I really make that many? I must have gone insane! XD

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-09-01 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you probably are insane for doing that, but look at it this way: people who wouldn't be able to understand the French and thus have only had access to English and subtitled movies will have an opportunity to know what's going on in the best of the French films, :D?

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-09-01 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, just about everything you post on the subject does. Except the crack, of course. XD

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-09-01 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I see. Pity they didn't think of that when they needed it. -__-;

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-09-01 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not there, but in other instances...

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-09-01 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that, but also, if you think about it, it could have been useful at just about any junction (even if it would have made the entire Revolution rather ridiculous >__>).

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-09-01 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That's probably so. The crack probably only would have succeeded in making certain episodes into tragi-comedy, which really wouldn't have been any better. >__>

I know. D: And it's just so upsetting--I try not to actually watch the portrayal of Thermidor that often. >__>

Sweetness. Overload. *DIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEES!*

Thank you SO MUCH for posting~ =D

P.S. - Finally, a film that makes Danton suitably creepy-looking. More than, even. *shivers* D:

And he acts creepily too: especially in that scene with Éléonore. D:

Danton in "LaTerreur et la Vertue"

[identity profile] hanriotfran.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Hi, people!:

A friend of mine who is French and knows my crush on French Revolution, send me "La Terreur et la Vertu" DVD just for he believed I MUST absolutely watch it, and there was no other way than to send me the movie. Here, in Argetina it's not available and if I would purchase it by Internet I should pay three times its cost. So, he send me the DVD. And...my! I was hooked! It's my favorite movie about French Revolution. It's the first one in which Maxime and Saint-Just are not the bad guys and Danton is showed as creepy as I imagine him. Lebas is adorable and I fell in love with the Duplay's family...Without mentioning that "my" Hanriot is wonderfully showed in it and I found Feluriot-Lescot absolutely GREAT! The Committé i exactly as I imagine it, and Vadier is as I've read he was.

Chapeau, Decaux and Castelot! Chapeau, Stellio Lorenzi!
